More than 8 million through Assisted Reproduction

40 years after the birth of the first test-tube baby, Englishwoman Louise Brown, another 8 million children have already been born into the world through assisted reproduction procedures.

The data were presented at the 34th Congress of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (Eshre), which takes place in Barcelona, Spain.

“The estimate shows a strong increase in the use of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique for the treatment of infertility”, commented the experts.

According to Eshre, currently, more than half a million children are born each year through assisted reproduction, including in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, and intratubal transfer of gametes or zygotes.

Spain is the most active European country in this sector: in 2015, 119,875 treatment cycles were carried out; followed by Russia (110,723), Germany (96,512), and France (93,918).

Still, in 2015, according to data presented at the congress, around 800,000 cycles of assisted reproduction treatments were carried out around the world, with the birth of 157,449 children. (ANSA)
