Maturation of Human Oocytes in Vitro
Oocytes retrieved from unstimulated follicles in the ovary can be matured (matured) in vitro and fertilized, and some can develop and be transferred to patients.
In vitro egg maturation has several advantages. The most important is the reduction of costs with simpler and less invasive treatment.
Egg maturation systems can be especially useful, for example, for patients with polycystic ovaries. Such patients often have a large number of eggs that can be obtained from small follicles without the need for treatment with gonadotropins (hormones) to stimulate follicular growth.
The successful use of this technique for such patients may allow its application to other patients who wish to avoid the undesirable effects of high doses of drugs for ovarian hyperstimulation.
To date, there have been too few reported pregnancies to draw adequate conclusions about the safety of the technique.
Another aspect to be highlighted is the possibility of associating this technique, combined with egg cryopreservation, allowing its more efficient use and contributing to the establishment of a donation program and the creation of an egg bank.
