TRANSFER OF EGG CYTOPLASM AND NUCLEUS
Nuclear transfer can be used to correct genetic mitochondrial diseases (mitochondria are energy organelles in the cell). * The nucleus of cells from embryos at early stages of development can be isolated from the mitochondrial elements of the cytoplasm and introduced into the enucleated cytoplasm (without a nucleus) of an egg from a donor that has normal mitochondrial function.
Another alternative is to transfer a small portion of the cytoplasm from a donor egg to a recipient egg to correct genetic abnormalities.
